The European Commission says its concerns over global representation have been adequately met in the latest US plan to handle internet naming and numbering through a non-profit corporation. Reuters reports that European Telecommunications Commissioner Martin Bangemann has written a letter to US Secretary of Commerce William Daley supporting plans to establish the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). We have been informed of widespread support for this proposal both from the member states and from the private sector in Europe, Bangemann wrote. In particular, he welcomed provisions that specify that each geographic region must have at least one representative but that no single region can account for more than half the board. Bangemann did specify that the deal must be consistent with EU competition rules if it is to continue to enjoy European support. The commission will continue to have the global functioning of the internet as a guiding principle, he wrote.
