EUROPEAN TELECOMMUNICATIONS INFORMATICS SERVICE BECOMES A FOUNDATION

By CBR Staff Writer

ETIS, the European Telecommunications Informatics Service, has been established as a Foundation. The organisation has been operating on an informal basis for a couple of years, as forum for discussing interoperability and compatibility between computer systems in European telecommunication networks. It brings together the directors and technical experts from the computing departments of the European public network operators and aims to identify means of using computers to improve trans-European and international services. ETIS is funded by the European carriers and will work out of an office in Brussels. Areas it will specifically be considering include open systems standards, office automation, security of data networks, generic software and software engineerin tools. It will not produce or procure any hardware or software but will establish appropriate liaison with other bodies in the field.
