The Paris-based Software Publishers Association Europe says that that revenues from personal computer application software sales in the second quarter were up in Western Europe by 15% over the second quarter last year, to $444m. Reflecting the decline in prices, unit sales increased 65% in the quarter. For the first half of the year, revenues were up 12% over the first half of 1993, to $958m, while unit sales were up 73%. The decline in MS-DOS and the increase in Windows application sales continued, with Windows applications accounting for better than five in six application sales dollars in the second quarter. Those sales totalled $381m, a 34% increase from the second quarter 1993. MS-DOS application sales were off 54%, down to only $33.1m while Macintosh application sales grew 9% for $28.4m. Geographically, France and Italy were the only countries showing negative growth in the second quarter, off 10% and 35%, respectively. Nonetheless, second quarter sales in France totalled $62.2m, making it Europe’s third-largest market. Germany-Austria and UK-Ireland represented the first and second largest markets, with sales there up 26% and 13%, respectively.
