The European Commission is today hosting a meeting about the current debate on governance of the internet’s domain name system (DNS). The meeting is an invitation-only affair designed to be a primer for those in the European industry, prior to the next major open meeting after INet 98 on July 24 and 25 in Geneva. We have learned, however, that the original intent of the meeting was to disrupt last week’s meeting in Reston, Virginia. The story goes that those within the EC responsible for organizing the meeting in Brussels today, originally wanted to hold it on June 30, the day before the Reston meeting started, as a shot across its bows. But reason prevailed, and being a closed event, interest within the internet community in the meeting is not particularly high as far as we could gather.
