The commission has asked the European Union countries to encourage the use of Digital Video Broadcasting Handheld (DVB-H) to help the industry grow.

Viviane Reding, European Telecoms Commissioner, said: For mobile TV to take off in Europe, there must first be certainty about the technology.

Reuters has reported that the decision is being opposed by EU member states such as the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. However, the commission has said that DVB-H is being widely used in Europe and is between trials and commercial launch in 16 countries.

The commission hopes that the forthcoming soccer European Championship and the Olympic Games will increase the popularity of mobile phone TV.
