Chello Broadband NV, the Dutch cable internet service provider, claimed it has signed over 36,000 subscribers to its broadband ISP. Launched two months ago, Chello, a subsidiary of United Pan-European Communications NV (UPC), provides internet access to home PCs via cable modem for a flat fee of around 40 euros ($43) a month.

Currently, the Netherlands, Norway, France, Belgium and Austria can receive the service over Aorta, UPC’s broadband network, which it claimed to be the largest European distributed caching service. Subscribers receive portal content in their native tongue, and a ‘remote control’ GUI to run alongside the browser. Aorta uses capacity leased from Hermes, and Inktomi traffic servers.
