EUROPE APPROVES BT-MCI MERGER BUT ADDS TWO CONDITIONS

The European Commission gave the go-ahead for the $20bn merger between British Telecommunications Plc and the US long-distance carrier MCI but imposed two firm conditions on the British company. First British Telecom must give its competitors access to its transatlantic submarine cables at fair prices and also divest MCI’s audio-conferencing business in Britain. MCI is yet to receive the all- clear from the US government.
