EUNET ADDS ESTONIA TO ITS EURO INTERNET NETWORK

By CBR Staff Writer

Fed up with sitting back and seeing ambitious telecommunications companies acquire its individual national affiliates, internet service provider EUnet International BV is fighting back, and has acquired a majority stake in Data Telecom AS of Estonia. Data Telecom is Estonia’s largest Internet provider, with annual sales equivalent to $771,500. EUnet says its plan is to grow its international presence thorough mergers, acquisitions and start-ups. It currently has 13 member companies in Europe. But the organization, still a loose configuration of companies formed in the days when the Internet was largely used by academics, looks increasingly vulnerable to acquisition from Internet hungry commercial telecommunications firms. EUNet Ireland has been the latest victim (CI No 3,306).
