EU expands collaboration with tech firms to fill more digital jobs

The companies will be responsible for the creation of 100,000 additional traineeships by end of 2015.

The European Commission has expanded its collaboration with companies from across the globe to advance the digital training programmes and jobs opportunities in the region.

The initiative expands the year old coalition, under which the EU along with companies aim to create 100,000 additional traineeships by end of 2015.

Under the 2014 target, the alliance aims to create jobs in the goods and retail sectors, which are dependant on workers with digital skills, including on shop and factory floors.

Partners of the coalition include Cisco, Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Samsung, SAP, Telefonica, and a range of industry and civil society associations.

European Commission president Barroso said the Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs uses the economies of scale the alliance has at the EU level to bring qualified people and innovative employers together.

"I urge all those who have not yet joined up to seize this opportunity to help Europe drive the next ICT revolution," Barroso added.

The coalition, which has 42 partner organisations, has so far filled an additional 2,200 digital jobs, 5,277 extra internships and apprenticeships as well as delivered training courses for an 269,000 people since March 2013.

In March 2013, the coalition was formed calling European digital businesses, governments, training and education sectors to join together to fill 900,000 digital jobs that are expected to open up by 2020.
