German computer distributor and retailer, Escom Computer AG, intends to establish its UK headquarters and distribution centre in Irvine, Scotland, creating 140 new jobs over two years: the Heppenheim, Frankfurt-based company hopes to open 30 new retail shops throughout the UK during that time to sell personal computers manufactured at Escom’s German factory, monitors from joint venture manufacturing facility, European Monitors Ltd, set up with Data Technology Holdings Ltd in May 1992 at Prestwick Freeport, West Scotland, to build displays, and peripherals from such suppliers as Hewlett-Packard Co; the scheme will cost a total UKP900,000, but will be supported by Locate in Scotland, the joint Scottish Enterprise and Scottish Office inward investment bureau, the Irvine Development Bureau and Enterprise Ayrshire; director of Escom UK David Smith said a Scottish site was chosen so that the group could build on its existing presence in the area.
