Ericsson unveils new mobile app store

Allows developers to upload and distribute applications

By CBR Staff Writer

Ericsson has launched a new market place eStore, which enables operators to set-up and offer mobile phone users an application store.

The eStore has 30,000 applications that are downloadable to any mobile phone. Content is available for various handset models and applications are continuously verified for various feature and smartphones, the company said.

Jan Wareby, senior vice president and head of business unit multimedia at Ericsson, said: “Our eStore makes it possible for the user to access a wide collection of applications from any mobile phone of choice. At the same time this also provides an opportunity for operators to increase their revenue.”

The company said that the eStore allows developers to get their application out to the consumer by posting them on the developer site. It also allows media brands, event organisers, enterprises and other content owners to get their applications out to the consumers.

Ericsson has entered into a partnership with Opera Software which provides the client framework for widgets and applications across multiple channels and devices.

Jon von Tetzchner, co-founder of Opera Software, said: By using standards-based Opera technology, Ericsson is empowering operators to bring more choice and convenience to their customers. And with this additional revenue stream, operators can now better target new users groups and retain existing customers through new, useful applications that can run on multiple device types.

The Ericsson eStore is now available in 25 markets worldwide on more than 100 operator networks.
