Ericsson Information Systems has taken a worldwide licence to 3Com’s Ethernet-based local area networking range of products to integrate into its own office automation offerings such as the Alfaskop 3270 workstations and the MD-110 digital PABX. Ericsson will call the result, which is fully NetBIOS-compatible to tie into Token Ring networks as well as Ethernet, the Personal Office System 61. Ericsson is adding value to the 3Com kit by introducing 3270 gateways encompassing SNA for the Alfaskop and IBM 3270 terminals; asynchronous connection to a mixed DEC environment as part of Ericsson’s joint venture with DEC; access to X400 electronic messaging systems; and linking into the MD110 PABX, which handles both voice and data, to provide a backbone network between remote local area networks. System 61 is available next month.
