EnterpriseDB adds new tools, upgrades Oracle compatibility

EnterpriseDB Corp, which prides itself as the adult in the open-source database market, is releasing a new version that consolidates its tools, while providing additional tweaks to make its offering more compatible with Oracle.

The company, which formally launched its product just last summer, claims its offering is more ready for prime time because it uses Postgres, a SQL database that’s been open source for over a decade, based on a second try by the original creators of rival Ingres.

EnterpriseDB claims its technology is more industrial strength than better-known open-source offerings like MySQL, which has been struggling of late to cement storage engines — especially now that Oracle has acquired both of them.

EnterpriseDB 8.1 adds support for Oracle packages. These are groups of stored procedures, developing using Oracle’s PL/SQL language, that enable database developers to become more productive. By far this was the most requested feature that our customers were asking for, said EnterpriseDB president Andy Astor.

Additionally, version 8.1 adds a number of tweaks to improve overall compatibility with Oracle. It also uses the latest Postgres release (version 8.1.3), which Astor claims is up to 50% faster than previous versions.

Significantly, the new version has consolidated tooling. Before, you had different tools with different user interfaces that worked with different platforms. The new tooling with version 8.1 is based on Java, getting around the platform and UI hurdles.

And it also adds an integrated debugger that can analyze all stored procedures, triggers, and functions that are developed. In effect, it provides the tools that programmers with commercial databases have long taken for granted. Finally, version 8.1 adds a monitoring console to analyze, manage, and tune one or more EnterpriseDB instances from a web browser.

News of the product announcement comes roughly six months and roughly 100,000 downloads after its initial launch. The privately held company is not yet releasing numbers or indicators that documents how successful its paid business has been

And it comes several days after the company elevated board member, and former webMethods CEO, Phillip Merrick to chairman. In effect, Astor, a fellow webMethods alumnus, asked his old boss to become his new one.
