Energis Ltd, embryonic national UK phone company owned by the National Grid Co – in turn owned by the 12 regional electricity companies, has signed with London Underground to lay fibre optic cables along its rail network to provide it with comprehensive trunks in central London. Energis will lay cables along the Circle Line and along connections from Kings Cross to Tottenham and from London Bridge to Wimbledon. It will have the right to use more than 40 miles of track and to extend its network, under a flexible agreement for the expansion of telecommunications services; London Underground will be a privileged customer.
