Encore Computer Corp has multi-threaded implementation of Sun Microsystems Inc’s Network File System for its Multimax family of NS32X32-based family of file, compute and database servers. Multi-threading supports true concurrent processing of multiple client requests on the parallel Unix systems, and Encore claims that it leads to significantly improved server performance compared with a single-thread server, and it does support all Network File System features, including Yellow Pages, Remote Procedure Call and NetDisk. In particular, Encore is claiming that it enables a given server to support between three and four times as many workstations efficiently without any degradation in response. Use of symmetrical multiprocessing means that a 16 user Multimax with 1Gb of disk can be field-up-raded to support over 1,000 users on a sys-em with 160Mb of memory and 67Gb on disk.
