Emerging Markets Payments (EMP), an electronic payments processing company, has teamed up with Middle East Payment Services (MEPS) to provide an electronic payment service across Jordan.

The Point-of-Sale (POS) service is supposed to provide a better service to cardholders and businesses by using a single POS terminal, according to the companies.

Paul Edwards, chairman at EMP Group, said: "This will greatly help overcome the challenge faced by merchants, as they will no longer require multiple POS terminals to cover all card schemes and acquirers. This saves unnecessary costs and is also more convenient for cardholders."

Dr Abdul Malik Al Jaber, Chairman of MEPS, added: "Jordan enjoys a very strong banking sector supported by a solid regulatory environment. However, the rate of card usage compared to card issuance is relatively low."

The seven-year contract will see EMP responsible for the deployment, logistics and maintenance of the POS terminals, while both companies will provide other payment services.

Mr. Hassan Mayassi, CEO of EMP Jordan, said: "This agreement also provides for upgrading the current terminal fleet, which will further improve the services offered to both carholders and merchants."
