The Wi-Fi Protected Setup specification provides two standardized options for setting up a Wi-Fi network. Users can enter a short personal identification number or press a button to establish secure networks and easily add devices to existing Wi-Fi Protected Setup networks.

An optional certification program, Wi-Fi Protected Setup which was previously called Wi-Fi Simple Config is intended to help ease installation and activation of security features on home Wi-Fi networks.

Research has shown that over 40% of Wi-Fi users found that installing security on a home Wi-Fi network moderately-to-very difficult.

Eventually, the Wi-Fi Protected Setup certification will cover a wide variety of devices, ranging from PCs and printers to televisions, cameras, and gaming consoles. The Wi-Fi Alliance has more than 275 members and has to date certified the interoperability of more than 2,800 products.
