Founded in 2000, Calabasas, California-based Emergent Game used to be known as Butterfly.net Inc until May 2005. The developer’s main product is the Emergent Platform, a suite of video game tools and online infrastructure.

Chapel Hill, North Carolina-based NDL is an independent developer of 3D graphics software used by game publishers and developers including Atari, Vivendi Universal Games, Firaxis, Mythic Entertainment, Bethesda Softworks, and Irrational Games. The company’s flagship product is the Gamebryo graphics engine and toolkit.

NDL has 18 employees while Emergent employs 15.

After the merger, Emergent Game Technologies will remain headquartered in Calabasas, with product development located in Calabasas, Chapel Hill, and Walnut Creek. Sales and marketing meanwhile will be based in Chapel Hill, and a sales office will open in Europe later in the third quarter.
