The Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) PC market continues to regain momentum with shipments increasing 22% to 26.32 million, compared to 21.58 million in the same period last year, according to market research and analyst firm IDC.
The firm said that portable PCs remain key driving form factor, with shipments recording 32.2% growth year on year across EMEA, supported by a return to strong double-digit growth in CEE markets. Desktop volumes also regained momentum, boosted by recovery in emerging markets and new all-in-one form factors.
Consumer demand continued to drive growth in Western Europe in Q1, with growth stimulated by accelerating mainstream notebook renewals, while new all-in-one PCs supported consumer desktop sales, IDC said.
HP gained the top spot in EMEA PC shipments, accounting for 21.4% of the total market share, while Acer gained the second spot with 19.4% market share. Dell took the third place 9.8% market share, followed by Asus and Toshiba with 8.1% and 5.9% market share, respectively. Asus registered the highest growth with 131.6%, followed by Acer, Dell, HP and Toshiba with 35.1%, 22.5%, 21.9% and 6.8%, respectively.
Eszter Morvay, research manager of IDC EMEA personal computing, said: The consumer market remained buoyant in the first quarter, and while mini-notebook sales stayed stable, most of the growth this quarter came from mainstream notebooks.
Mainstream notebook demand was forecast to regain momentum, but the market was boosted even further by strong vendor and channel push around Intel’s new Core i platform. This has led to a refresh of all major vendors’ product offering whose launch was coupled with major promotional campaigns, which supported increasing noise around computing overall.
