EMC Corp has taken an equity stake in Siros Technologies Inc to spur development of Siros’s so-called Very-Small-Aperture Laser (VSAL) technology designed to improve the areal density, or bit- storage capacity, of magnetic disk drives.

The size of the investment, announced yesterday by Siros, was not disclosed. Hopkinson, Massachusetts-based EMC is the world’s- largest maker of high-volume data storage equipment. Siros, which develops ultra high-density data storage devices using holographic technology, also said Lucent Technologies Inc had increased its equity stake under its ongoing support for development and commercialization of VSAL technology, acquired by Siros from Lucent’s Bell Labs unit in April.

As well as EMC and Lucent, Siros announced investments from existing stockholders, including venture firm, New Enterprises Inc and Citigroup Inc’s Citibank.
