The flamboyant CEO of Oracle Corp, Larry Ellison, in Australia to prepare for the Sydney-Hobart yacht race, has claimed that a new world of ‘internet computing’ will break Microsoft Corp’s grip on the personal computer market. Naturally, Ellison sees Oracle as one of the leading players in this emerging market, claiming that company already owns the high-end of the e-commerce sector. Reuters reports that Ellison said that the move towards internet and intranet-based computing would damage Microsoft more than the current antitrust trial, whatever the outcome. The comments represent a return to a familiar stomping ground for Ellison, internet/intranet-based computing being the concept behind the ill-fated network computer. Interestingly, Ellison’s reported comments gave few technical details about his brave new world would be achieved; he made no mention of what operating system and browser software people would be using to access his web-based paradise.
