Elk Industries Inc, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has followed up its patent infringement victory over IBM and its Rolm unit with a similar settlement from DEC. In each case the settlement involves a cash payment to Elk. As with IBM and Rolm, Elk has granted DEC a non-exclusive licence to the technology. The patents cover voice store and forward technology using touchtone telephone to add and retrieve spoken messages to and from a voicemail databank. The suit against DEC was originally brought way back in 1978.
