The Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) protocol gas reached version 1.0, with the publication of the specification by Visa International Inc and MasterCard International Inc. Developers will now be able to write software complying with the spec and have it tested and certified by a certification authority that the SET partners will reveal in the third quarter. Widespread availability of SET-compliant software is expected late this year. Partners in the effort include GTE Corp, IBM Corp, Microsoft Corp, Netscape Communications Corp, RSA Data Security Inc, Terisa Systems Inc, VeriSign Inc and VeriFone Inc, among others.
