Elcam Europe Ltd of Ripon, North Yorkshire, which offers computer-aided manufacturing systems, has been acquired by Adra Systems Inc of Lowell, Massachusetts, a specialist in turnkey computer-aided design systems. Elcam’s software will be ported to the Adra 3000 Plus workstation, and will carry on being supported on Apollo, Sun, and DEC workstations; while Elcam’s worldwide operations will be merged into Adra’s international activities. This announcement follows the news that Salford University has bought an Elcam System for UKP25,000 to be used in its higher level teaching, project work and collaborative work with industrial partners. The system is a suite of numerical control programming software which includes 2.5 through five axis machining, two and four axis lathes, data conversion and transfer, and advanced surfacing. The suite also features a post processor generator with automated writing capabilities, as well as a desktop prove out simulator which debugs part programs and post processors before the job hits the factory floor. The acquisition makes the newly-named Adra Elcam Europe Inc division a true computer-aided manufacture and design systems company, offering an overall computer integrated manufacturing strategy.
