EE joins Equinix to improve quality of mobile video

The Mobile Video Alliance (MVA) tackles technical issues such as caching and adaptive bit rates.

By Amy-Jo Crowley

Equinix, a data centre company, joined with British mobile operator EE to launch the Mobile Video Alliance (MVA) at the DTG Summit in efforts to improve the quality and sustainability of mobile video.

The alliance aims to tackle video quality over wireless, mobile networks and technical issues such as caching and adaptive bit rates.

Equinix, which is currently building data centres in London and Melbourne, said it would make its recently launched Solution Validation Centre available to MVA members to test new standards and configurations.

"Our data centres are where content physically connects to networks. This makes us a vital interconnection platform for mobile video delivery and we are committed to encouraging and enabling the mobile video ecosystem," said Michael Winterson, VP Sales and Marketing, Equinix EMEA.

The alliance comes as mobile data traffic sales are expected to hit $42bn (£25bn) by 2018 in response to increasing demand for video content from consumers, according to analyst firm Juniper Research.

Nitin Bhas, author of the report, told CBR in January that mobile networking operators would have to review their tariff structures as consumers migrate to 4G connections.

Rory Murphy, Equinix Director, Market Development, Global Content & Digital Media will be joined by experts from EE, the BBC and Hutchison Whampoa in a panel discussion starting 2pm today on the quality and sustainability of mobile video.
