EDS chosen for $1bn veterans health records deal

The Department of Veterans Affairs has tapped EDS to be a prime contractor for the agency's electronic health records program, known as VistA. EDS is one of eight suppliers under the blanket purchasing agreement worth up to $1bn over 10 years.

EDS has been working on VistA, which stands for Veterans Health Information Systems Technology and Architecture, for the past nine years, according to a company statement. The new agreement calls for EDS to provide applications maintenance services.

The deal will also ensure the continuity of services required to transform the VA software system into an open architecture, should the VA decide to move in this direction, the EDS release states.

EDS will partner with health organizations including the Mayo Clinic and Oregon Health and Science University for its work on the VistA system.

The contract includes a five-year base period and five one-year options. An Associated Press report yesterday named defense contractor SAIC and services vendor Perot Systems Corp as the other two major award winners under the contract.
