Edgcore Technology Inc, which has finally gotten around to announcing its OEM agreement to supply its OEM Motorola 680X0 compatible E2000 board sets to Hitachi Ltd (CI No 1,226) noteworthy not least because Hitachi was the official Japanese second source for the 68000 but was chopped off at the 68020 generation – notes that the architecture of the E2000, while employing several RISC features, but claims that it has far superior performance in the commercial multi-user environments while providing Motorola 680X0 compatibility. The single processor rates at 18 to 20 VAX MIPs with an average instruction time of 1.2 clock cycles per instruction at the processor level. The external input-output bandwith is 60Mbps with multiple input output channels – VMEbus is standard, but alternatives can be adapted – and main memory goes to 1Gb. The Scottsdale, Arizona company has agreed to be acquired by Arix Corp, San Jose.
