Smart thermostat Ecobee3, the first of its kind to work with Apple’s HomeKit, is going on sale across Apple stores in North America today.

The use of the HomeKit platform will make it easy to discover, group, and control the thermostat and any other HomeKit-enabled accessories.

Users will be able to control the smart thermostat using Siri on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, provided it has iOS 8.1 or later version of operation system.

Homeowners will be able to set temperature according to their arrival or departure at home, when they go to bed, or any other time using the device with Siri.

The $249 device is capable of adjusting its own temperature by detecting if anyone is at home and heating and cooling accordingly.

Users can also buy additional sensors, which cost $79 for a pack of two, to make the device smarter.

Ecobee3 thermostats use data points enabling the device to make personalised heating and cooling decisions to save money on energy costs and making the process easier to homeowners.

According to Ecobee, it will only take around 45 minutes to self-install the device.
