EC puts “N” for “No WMP” into Windows

Microsoft and the European Commission have agreed a name for the version of Windows XP that will ship without Microsoft's Media Player. Microsoft plans to offer customers Windows XP Home Edition N and Windows XP Professional N, with the "N" standing for "Not with Media Player".

By CBR Staff Writer

The name was suggested by the EC which had rejected 10 earlier suggestions from Microsoft, including Windows XP Reduced Media Edition. The Commission rejected Reduced Media Edition saying the name should not put customers off of choosing the product.

Microsoft has been forced to remove Media Player from Windows XP after the Commission found Microsoft guilty of acting anti-competitively against rivals by bundling the products.
