Easynet set to offer 24Mbps in Q3

Pan-European broadband provider Easynet Group looks set to offer broadband speeds of upto 24Mbps by the end of the summer 2005 in the UK, as the company trials ADSL2+.

By CBR Staff Writer

Whilst we await the process of ADSL2+ approval for commercial use by the industry technical forum, we are undertaking a technical trial of ADSL2 and ADSL2+ capacity that is already embedded in our LLU network, said CEO David Rowe in a statement.

We anticipate full commercial launch of ultra fast broadband services in the second half of 2005.

Back in December, Easynet launched 8Mbps broadband service called LLUStream aimed at ISPs, telecom carriers, and system integrators. Its decision to launch LLUStream was possible following the company’s decision to start investing in local loop unbundling (LLU).

Local loop unbundling refers to the opening of the last mile of household telephone connections. LLU allows rival operators to install their own equipment into BT local telephone exchanges, therefore giving them cheaper wholesale internet rates.

Easynet was one of the first companies to invest in LLU, and the UK-based ISP has annual sales of GBP 140m ($268m). Its business has traditionally focused on the business customer, rather than the more fickle consumer.

Its IP network is built around the British Waterway’s canal system, and is one of the largest fiber networks in the UK.
