In East Germany, the race for solvent Western partners is well and truly on – overmanning, undercapitalisation and hopelessly outdated technology have meant that East German developers have recognised that without this help they simply won’t be able to survive, Computerwoche reports. In the East German Unix community, they are crying out for the machines on which to produce software up to Western standards, and while they would prefer to team up with their fellow countrymen for their debuts in the West, it is clear that they cannot afford to hang around being too choosy. Indeed, if no Unix-mate – German or otherwise – is forthcoming, many seem quite prepared to snuggle up under the wing of producers of proprietary systems – provided, of course, the East German’s independance is assured.
