A group of East German engineers have got together to form the Verein Deutsche Ingenieure, Gliederung DDR – the East German branch of the German Engineers Association (VDI), writes Computerwoche: the original VDI was founded in 1856, but lost responsibility for its East German members after the last world war, when its headquarters were moved from Berlin to Dusseldorf; nevertheless, with a membership of over 100,000, it still claims to be the largest engineers association in Western Europe.
