Digital Island Inc, the San Francisco-based provider of global IP network services reported a net third-quarter loss of $22m, or 62 cents a share, compared to $5.7m, or 36 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Analysts taking part in a First Call poll had, on average, expected the firm to show a net loss of 66 cents a share. Revenue for the three months to September 30 was up 433% on the corresponding period in 1998 at $4.9m. Digital Island announced a stock-based deal to merge with content delivery network company, Sandpiper Networks Inc, on October 25. The merger is expected to close before the end of March, 2000.
