Individual countries typically set their own specific requirements and processes to certify communications technologies for government use. As part of the new agreement, Eads and Research In Motion (RIM) will work to achieve localized certifications of the BlackBerry wireless platform in a range of government sectors throughout Europe.

The move follows a previous arrangement between the two companies that focused on achieving security certification of the BlackBerry for use within the French government. The platform is also currently being deployed by government agencies in North America.

Wireless data technologies represent one of the most significant strategic IT opportunities available today for government and corporate organizations alike, commented Tom Enders, CEO of Eads’ Defense and Security Systems Division (DS).

RIM’s BlackBerry is designed to allow government employees to stay connected with wireless access to email, data, phone, web and organizer features. The government sector currently accounts for 10% of all BlackBerry subscribers.
