DULL QUARTER AT IBM: JOB CUT BENEFITS YET TO SHOW

IBM now reckons that the final head count reduction as a result of its persuasive early retirement programme of benefits and inducements will be 12,000, up from the 10,000 it had been forecasting. The new figure was given with the report of IBM’s first quarter figures, which saw net profits slump below the billion mark for the first time in many a long quarter; details in p3.In the UK, 600 back-room staff have been drafted out onto the road to add more muscle to the sales force.
