DTI TO LICENCE SIX INDEPENDENT SATELLITE TELECOMMUNICATIONS OPERATORS

By CBR Staff Writer

The UK Department of Trade & Industry is prepared to licence up to six independent satellite telecommunications operators to offer direct private line services in the UK bypassing British Telecom and Mercury Communications – but the services will be receive-only: applications are required within six weeks and licences will be awarded in April; Pan American Satellite Corp, Greenwich, Connecticut, and Electronic Data Systems, Dallas, are expected to be among the applicants.
