What passions can urbane Parry Mitchell have been stirring up in the normally civilised electors of Salisbury to occasion such an outrage when his party’s leader Dr David Owen visited the constituency United Leasing’s chairman hopes to win for the Alliance? Seems Dr Owen was addressing a large crowd in the sunshine when he came under fire from a hail of tomatoes: according to the London Evening Standard, the SDP leader ducked, and his Special Branch bodyguard ended up with tomato all over his person.
