DON’T RELY ON A HEART ATTACK

Management guru Peter Drucker – he formulated the concept of management by objective when doing work for General Electric in the 1950s, and we have quoted his unusually perceptive comments on Japan from time to time in Computergram – has a nice line in aphorisms, one of which was quoted in the Wall Street Journal the other day: the only way to get rid of incompetent management at the very top is a heart attack, but it usually strikes the wrong person, it’s not reliable.
