Don’t hold your breath: back in March-April 1988, Motorola Inc tried to upstage Intel Corp’s launch of the 80486 by preannouncing the 68040 – and the company must have been regretting its hubris ever since; the part was announced again in January last year with promises of enough parts for people to be able to get machines into the market by the end of 1989, with volume in January; since then, so many bugs have turned up that companies like Hewlett-Packard Co, critically dependent on the chip, are getting desperate as their workstation market share erodes, NCR Corp has jumped ship and will build future Towers around the Intel family, and Motorola is nowpromising volume for next month.
