It’s not the endorsement that Microsoft Corp was hoping for just a week after the launch of Windows 98. At the end of last week, Dell Computer Corp and Toshiba America Information Systems Inc both issued warnings to their user base advising them not to upgrade to Windows 98 until the various patches and BIOS updates for certain models were in place. Dell told users of its Latitude notebooks to delay upgrading until fixes became available, although Inspiron notebook users were offered immediate fixes. Toshiba said it was also working on fixes for notebook users that had its ACPI interface installed. Other vendors were also issuing warnings and fixes. The move follows widespread reports of unrecoverable crashes during the upgrade process from Win95 to Win98 (CI No 3,440).
