Documentum Inc, the US content management company, has launched a web application platform which it claims will make the lives of administrators, developers and users easier when installing e-commerce front ends. The company says that the software, named Documentum 4i, includes security and workflow in applications and will enable developers to package them so that the apps to be distributed more efficiently over the internet.

The software has been developed using Microsoft’s Visual Studio graphical user interface, which enables users to bring information directly onto their Internet Explorer browser. Documentum hopes to target the Microsoft base after its own 500 to 600 customers. Documentum’s UK managing director Ian Howells gives an example of a pharmaceuticals firm using the software to ensure that the different operations have access to the same compliance regulations in case of chemical spillage.

Documentum is also interested in dove-tailing with Microsoft’s knowledge management strategy. Howells says that 4i will provide the information used in supply chain management, referring to its version as ‘knowledge chain management.’ Its use in e-commerce, for companies trying to establish portals, is one of the products’ strengths, claims Howells.
