Documentum Inc, the document management software provider, is trying to jump on the application service provider bandwagon. The Pleasanton, California-based firm sees application hosting for medium-sized firms and supply chain collaboration for corporates as key opportunities and it has signed deals to provide its 4i application and content development software to three internet firms with vertical market focus.
Blueline Online Inc, based in Palo Alto, provides web-based project management systems for the construction and engineering market, enabling contractors to connect with central sites using a 3Com PalmPilot. ConnectSite.com Inc is a Chicago document management firm which plays in the accountancy services arena, while Boca Raton-headquartered CyLex Systems Inc does the same for imaging.
Documentum clearly sees an opportunity in application hosting and is attempting to tailor its existing software to fit the web content management niche. Last month, the firm released web-based knowledge management software for project workers (CI No 3,758), another step in its move towards online markets. Documentum’s first step in the ASP direction was in August when it signed up with the ASP Industry Consortium, a collection of firms launched in May including Cisco, IBM, Sun, Compaq and AT&T.
