The two companies said they expected to form technical tie-ups in handset middleware centered on Java technology.

DoCoMo is also paying JPY 15bn ($125.4m) for new shares in browser developer Access Co Ltd, raising its stake from 7.12% to 11.66%. Access considerably broadened its product range with its $322.4m acquisition in September of PalmSource Inc, which gives it a full range of software to develop mobile devices.

Access’s browser is widely used in DoCoMo’s 3G handsets and the two companies said they would work together on upper layer application software centered on browser technology.
