DoCoMo to cut i-mode charges for heavy users

NTT DoMoMo, Japan's biggest wireless operator, says that it will reduce its rate for i-mode users. Users of the i-mode mobile Internet service in Japan will see the rate cut by one-third, providing they pay more than $255 per month.

This is the first rate cut since i-mode services were launched in February 1999. The reduction will come into effect on September 1.

The decision is good news for customers. DoCoMo has received criticism from users that i-mode rates are too high. However, the company has said that it cannot estimated the immediate impact of the cut on revenues.
