DIVICOM VIDEO ENCODERS TAP C-CUBE CHIP SET

By CBR Staff Writer

C-Cube Microsystems Inc’s CLM4700 MPEG-2 digital video encoder chip set will be used in DiviCom Inc’s set-top program encoders. These encoders will be used by Thomson Consumer Electronics SA for the TeleTV digital home video delivery system. In addition, DiviCom is providing Thomson with the MPEG-2 encoding systems. TeleTV Inc, headquartered in New York City, is the joint venture of three Baby Bells, Bell Atlantic Corp, Nynex Corp and Pacific Telesis Group Inc, and covers major metropolitan areas including Boston, New York, Washington DC and Los Angeles. The joint venture is charged with providing common technology and programming for the entry of the three Bells into the television distribution business. All three have committed to introducing digital television on Wireless Cable or MMDS Multi-point, Multi-channel Distribution Service within a year. This application enables the delivery of localized, customized programming into the home by providing broadcast encoders in each regional location to achieve a ‘one to few’ ratio of broadcast encoders to households, says Alex Balkanski, president and chief executive of Milpitas, California-based C-Cube. The CLM4700 chip set supports main level, main profile and frame-based encoding. This means the chip set accepts uncompressed digital video input and provides a compressed video stream output, using C-Cube’s compression microcode. The output bit stream conforms to the MPEG-2 compression standard in the Main Level, Main Profile mode. Main Level, Main Profile is intended for standard definition television applications (as opposed to the reduced resolution found in many computer applications and the higher resolution of high definition television). The Microcode Performs adaptive field-frame encoding, which means that it has the ability to switch back and forth between motion estimation modes with a fine level of granularity.
