Walt Disney has appointed Twitter chairman Jack Dorsey as an independent board director with immediate effect.
The latest appointment makes Dorsey the latest in a series of Silicon Valley heavyweights joining the media firm’s board, which included the late Steve Jobs and Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg.
Disney’s chairman, CEO Robert Iger said that Dorsey is a talented entrepreneur who has helped create groundbreaking new businesses in the social media and commerce spaces.
"The perspective he brings to Disney and its Board is extremely valuable, given our strategic priorities, which include utilising the latest technologies and platforms to reach more people and to enhance the relationship we have with our customers," Iger said.
Dorsey has co-founded microblogging service Twitter, which allows users to create and share ideas and information via messages of 140 characters or less.
In addition, he is also the CEO of commerce firm Square.
Along with the latest appointment, Walt Disney also has slashed Iger’s fiscal 2013 compensation by 15% with a bonus reduction.
