Discreet Logic Inc, Montreal special-effects and video-editing software is painfully demonstrating that not every company turning its hand to snazzy multimedia technologies makes money at it. The company is taking a charge of about $10.9m against last quarter’s figures to cover the cost of slashing its workforce by 28%, bringing it down to about 275, and closing numerous offices. It has restructured into three areas of executive responsiblity: product development, sales and marketing and finance and is consolidating key research and development functions and personnel at its Montreal headquarters. It is closing its Cambridge, Massachusetts sales and research and development office, its New York and Boca Raton sales offices, its Irish manufacturing and integration center and its Connecticut, London, Paris and Innsbruck, Austria research and development offices.
