Disagreements reminiscent of the ones that sank the Unidata Franco-German-Dutch mainframe consortium in the mid-1970s are threatening the proposed $2,000m seven-year Joint European Semiconductor Silicon advanced chip development consortium: the project would be a successor to, and structured round, the existing Megaproject joint venture between Siemens and Philips, but according to the Financial Times, Siemens is resisting demands from SGS-Thomson Semiconductor that it be permitted to become a full member – while the Franco-Italian company is opposed to building a new research centre in Schleswig-Holstein rather than use the participants’ existing research labs.
