Digital Realty opens $150m Dublin facility

Data centre developer’s first full design, build and commission project in Ireland

By Vinod

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny helped open a Tier III data centre in Dublin with a message to attendees at the ceremony praising the company’s commitment as an investor who had commited $150m to the economy.

Digital Realty Trust the world’s largest Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) opened a new data centre at Digital Profile Park just west of Dublin.

The 10-acre site supports the phased development plan of 15.36 megawatts of data centre space across four buildings, totaling 85,000 square feet.

Bill Stein, CEO, Digital Realty said: "Ireland offers the five Ps for attracting investment. Policies, an attractive tax regime of 12.5% corporate tax. Protection, strong data protection; Pedigree based on the number of US firms already located; Pipes, excellent connectivity and Power, renewable and stable power provision."

The Profile Park project is adjacent to major data centre developments by Microsoft and Google.

Bernard Geoghegan, Managing Director, EMEA & Asia Pacific at Digital Realty, said "Our investment in Dublin’s Profile Park was based on Ireland’s standing as a leading international location for technology and innovation. The facility is designed to offer both local and multinational enterprise clients an excellent range of connectivity options into the wider Digital Realty Ecosystem. It also features an indirect air optimisation system, which improves our clients’ data centre energy efficiency by lowering PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) and therefore their total cost of occupancy."

During the testing phase at peak load the site achieved a PUE of between 1.15 and 1.18. By comparison, the PUE utilising a traditional chilled water system is approximately 1.6.
