Did shopping appeal more than turkey this Thanksgiving?

Americans didn't just eat turkey and give thanks this year, but instead used their biggest national holiday for some online shopping.

By CBR Staff Writer

Monday November 28, 2005 was expected to be the biggest online shopping day of the year, but in practice Americans chose to make most of their purchases on Thanksgiving itself. The number of consumers visiting online retailers jumped 29 per cent on November 25, 2005, compared to a year earlier, according to research giant Nielsen.

According to research firm AlertSite, the so-called Cyber Monday didn’t happen this year, overtaken by the holiday day itself. People aren’t waiting, they’re [online] shopping on Thanksgiving, reported the firm.

That boosted online sales for retailers by 24 per cent for November to $6.96 billion. Research firm ComScore estimates overall online shopping this year will climb 24 per cent to $19.6 billion.

But while Thanksgiving shopping took place at home, most consumers are making their purchases at work with Internet connections at offices accounting for 58 per cent of all online spending.

Apple’s Video iPod was the biggest seller on several mainstream web sites. Amazon.com wouldn’t detail its post-Thanksgiving take, but a spokesman said the company expects to have its best holiday season ever.
